The old swimming hole

When my husband and I married 25 years ago, we decided to move to the country to raise our kids. We preferred the county school system and liked the idea of having some "space" around us. Our next big decision was to put in a swimming pool. We liked swimming as kids, both of us swimming by age two, and wanted our kids to have that same opportunity.

We never regretted the decision. Though my husband rarely swam (except to cool down occasionally after mowing the lawn), the kids and I used it every summer. When they got older and I knew they didn't always want "mom" out there, I could watch from the window. It was enjoyed on a regular basis.

Things changed once the kids finished high school. They no longer came home for long stretches and it became obvious how costly it was (both in time and money) to keep the pool up and running, only to get very little use. The past two summers it didn't get opened at all.

We knew the practical thing to do. Fill it in. I was 100% in agreement with the decision. It will make a wonderful garden spot next summer. Still....now that the deed is done, I'm feeling a bit sad.

Shortly after the pool was put in.

Today.

*Sigh*

Oh Wow!!! Didn't know you were planning that!

As much as I love swimming and the boys do, I have neighbors that freely let us use their pool when we want to. I did NOT want the hassle or expense of pool upkeep.

It's kinda sad. I'm sad. I moved away from mine in 2004. You know that it was the practical thing to do...still and all, you'll look out some day and imagine the kids jumping into the pool that isn't there.

Sigh.

I'm sad just looking at the pictures. It was the practical thing to do.

I know I'm happy my apartment complex maintains our pool. If I go the right time of day, it's mine alone.

Such happy memories. What do you plan to do with the space?

Change is sad like that sometimes. Like Petty asked, do you have plans for the space? Might be well to do something nice there, rather than let it be this sad blank spot.

Oh, no! I miss our pool so much now that it's gone. (Not the expensive upkeep, though.) I hope it makes a magnificent garden. Blessings!

I appreciate all your sympathetic comments. Now I don't feel quite so silly about being sad.

Right now the plan is to grow my squash and tomatoes there next spring. My husband said he might want to plant a few fruit trees, too. We'll have good access to water since the well house is right there.

I'll make a point of sharing photos of whatever we do to make up for this sad photo here!

I sent an email about the moisturizer. I'll let you know what I find out.

Oh, I just spent my first summer in 30 years without a pool. I swim laps for a mile a day...until now. Sometimes when every muscle aches, I imagine how wonderful it would feel to stretch out in the water. And no pool for the grandbabies. If I didn't have all of these rolls, I could walk a few blocks to swim. Pathetic! Sigh.

Jen - thanks for checking on that for me!

Jenny - it's all about taking that first step. (easier said than done, I know)

Yes...quite sad :(
Well, I think it would make a beautiful garden, Kelly.
And thanks for your informative comment on my blog. What you said about oats is so impressive! Much appreciated it.

Hope you have a great Thursday!

Big hugs!

Awww...that is kind of sad. It must be weird not to see it!!! But it gave you all good times ... and now you will have lots to eat!

Sad but the right thing to do. Noone can take the memories away from you. I remember swimming in your pool as a child/teen.

Betty, Jenners - yes, it will make a great garden and that's what I'm going to focus on now because to be honest, it's like a punch in the gut every time I look out the back windows.

Bob - The folks that live in my old house filled in that pool, too. *sigh*
