I was sad when Gerry Rafferty died earlier this month. My favorite of his songs, Baker Street, made my "favorite five - songs" list that I posted last year. It was released in February of 1978 and I spent that summer studying in England. Brings back great memories!

Favorite Five - YouTube clips
Our satellite internet connection does not lend itself to watching YouTube clips. While faster than dial-up, it allows a very limited amount of downloading each day before totally slowing our system to a crawl. So....although I haven't spent lots of time at YouTube, I've still managed to find a few short clips that are guaranteed to entertain me.
I'll bet most of you are familiar with at least one of these.
1. Model Falls Twice - I'm a bit klutzy and can always laugh at myself when I trip, but it's really the newscasters' reactions that are funniest here.
2. Lizard Jumps on Newscaster - You'll probably have to watch this one more than once. Keep an eye on the left side of the picture.
3. Sneezing Baby Panda - Short, but hilarious!
4. Spiders on Drugs - My favorite spider is the "caffeine" spider.
5. Evolution of Dance - Lengthier than the others, but worth the time.

Favorite Five - Love Songs
Okay. I'm not a romantic kinda gal and I don't have a playlist on my iPod for "love songs", but... I've had a request for a Favorite Five post on this topic. Without letting myself think too long and hard about it, here's what I've come up with. I've included some YouTube clips, but they don't always do the song justice.
1. I Only Have Eyes For You (Art Garfunkel) - I remember listening to this as a teenager and my mother coming into my room singing along with it. I was surprised to find out it was a cover of a song that had been recorded several times before! YouTube clip
2. Waiting For a Girl Like You (Foreigner) - This one brings back memories of a time that wasn't so pleasant. I try not to let that ruin the song for me. YouTube clip
3. Don't Want to Wait Anymore (The Tubes) - The memories are a little better with this one even thought they're from pretty much the same time period. YouTube clip (The studio version is SO much better!!)
4. Love Me Now (Gino Vannelli) - Actually, this song is best when listened to with the song that preceeds it on the album, Storm at Sunup. I use to listen to this in my college dorm using a pair of those huge headphones.... really, really getting into it. YouTube clip
5. Ain't Nobody (Rufus & Chaka Khan) - There was a time where I used this as the personalized ringtone for my husband on my phone. YouTube clip

Guam

Possibilities
Quid's new "Tune-In Friday" feature makes me want to share music, too!
Last week I mentioned my recent Jazz kick. Although I normally prefer instrumental Jazz, I've heard enough with vocals lately that I have developed an appreciation for it. Herbie Hancock, of Jazz/Funk fame, put out a collaboration album in 2005 entitled Possibilities, featuring artists such as Paul Simon, Santana, Annie Lennox, Joss Stone, John Mayer and more. It was A Song for You with Christina Aguilera that drew me to the album. Here's a short version that I found on YouTube.

Cinema Paradiso
I've been on a pretty intense Jazz kick the past couple of months.
Chris Botti and Yo Yo Ma are two names I wouldn't normally think of putting together. One I associate with Jazz, the other with Classical. However, they do go together and quite nicely at that.

All Aboard!
When I was a little girl my dad had a fantastic model train set. Laid out in a U-shape, it covered the equivalent of about three ping-pong tables and included residential, industrial, and business districts. My favorite thing was the haunted house with buttons I could push to make different colors flash in the windows.
I received an e-mail from my cousin featuring a model train set that puts my dad's to shame! I believe things like this bring out the child in all of us. Check it out!

Mercy Me ~ Snow!
Our little community has a nice "Municipal Auditorium".... a great venue for concerts and other programs. Other than the regional symphony, a couple of dance recitals, and a few random events, it rarely gets used. We aren't exactly a tour stop for big-name groups. Occasionally we have a rare treat and last night was one of those times. Mercy Me, a popular Contemporary Christian band, came to our town and put on a fantastic show for more than 1800 fans. They performed many of their more popular hits including the clip I've included here. In addition, they shared a song from their next album due to be released in May along with the background for the album's theme. It was a wonderful evening that flew by all too quickly. Local band Two Empty Chairs opened for them and gave a great perfomance as well.
The afternoon and evening brought something else to our area that we don't see often: Snow! It began falling mid-afternoon and gently snowed all evening. We awoke to a beautiful layer of white on everything except for the roads and sidewalks. That's what made it extra lovely in my opinion.... enough snow to look pretty, but not interfere with travel! We got about 2.25 inches at our house. It's already melting, but it was nice while it lasted.

Hit me with some Jazz
Considering my dad owned and managed a radio station which fell under the "Middle of the Road" label, my childhood was filled with "Easy Listening" music. My first introduction to what I would consider Jazz was Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass. Perhaps I was initially just fascinated by the lady dressed only in whipped cream on the cover of "Whipped Cream and Other Delights", but I grew to have a true appreciation for Alpert and his trumpet.
Teenage years came along and wooed me over to Rock & Roll, especially the “Progressive” or “Art” Rock groups such as Yes, Genesis, Pink Floyd, ELP, etc. Jazz was pretty much forgotten until my 20s and 30s. None of my friends or relatives liked Jazz, but somehow, I learned of a few select Jazz artists and began a small CD collection which included performers like David Sanborn, Candy Dulfer, Lee Ritenour, Larry Carlton, Joe Sample and Miles Davis to name a few.
The advent of XM Radio broadened my horizons and opened me up to many new artists...or at least new to me. While looking up specific songs I’ve heard on the radio I often spend time browsing, and occasionally downloading, other songs at iTunes. For that matter, I’ve even found a few by reading other blog posts!
My library has grown to include a wide variety: Acoustic Alchemy, Steve Laury, Stanley Jordan, Victor Wooten, Gato Barbiere, Down to the Bone, Bill Bruford and more. With a few exceptions (most notably George Benson) I prefer instrumental Jazz to that with vocals.
Here’s a clip of a song I heard earlier in the week on XM. The title is "Summer Madness" and can be found on Jerald Daemyon’s 1995 "Thinking About You album". Enjoy!

October iPod Roulette
It’s been awhile since I popped in the ear buds and escaped from the world through music. Rather than picking and choosing, I opted for a round of iPod Roulette. My only disappointment was not having any jazz come up. Overall, a pretty good session! Of course the YouTube clips are not necessarily the versions I listened to.
1. Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door (Bob Dylan) – I think Dylan is a great songwriter, but don’t always like listening to him sing. This is one of his better vocal performances, in my opinion.
2. One of These Nights (Eagles) – Okay… so I can’t hear the Eagles anymore without thinking of Quid! This is from their early stuff, which I prefer.
3. Can’t Get Enough (Bad Company) – One of those groups I rarely think about, but do enjoy a few of their songs.
4. My Sweet Lord (George Harrison) – I’ll be honest here. George was always my least favorite Beatle. This IS one of his better songs, though.
5. Bring the Rain (Mercy Me) – This group has some of best Contemporary Christian Music out there and this song never fails to lift me up.
6. Crazy [D-Influence Mix] (Mark Morrison) – I’ll never forget the first time I heard this. I’d bought the CD (back before I had iTunes and could get singles) for another song (Return of the Mack). The whole family was in the car when I popped it in the CD player the first time and the look on my husband’s face was priceless! NOT his kind of music!!
7. Love Bites (Def Leppard) – Decent classic rock.
8. Misunderstanding (Genesis) – This song is from the Duke album. I love the whole album, which tells a story when played in its entirety, but it’s apparent that their sound was starting to go “pop” at this point. My favorite Genesis is from the early 70s (Selling England by the Pound).
9. A Medley: For Sentimental Reasons, Tenderly, Autumn Leaves (Natalie Cole) – Her voice is almost as smooth as her father’s.
10. Respect (Aretha Franklin) – My version is from the Blues Brothers 2000 movie. It’s a little different from the original, but still classic Aretha!
11. Mainstreet (Bob Seger) – One of those songs I can’t help but sing along to.
12. Misty (Johnny Mathis) – From the movie Play Misty for Me (or did the song come out before the movie? I have a couple of versions on my iPod including an instrumental.
13. Dude [Looks Like a Lady] (Aerosmith) – Other than their song Dream On from when I was a teenager, I didn’t appreciate this band until I was in my 30s, I like lots of their stuff now.
14. Sweet Love (The Commodores) – One of those guilty pleasures. I love their smooth voices!
15. Symphony No. 40 in G minor K. 550 II: Andante Con Moto (Mozart) – A pleasant way to end my iPod Roulette session.

Should we ban Dihydrogen Monoxide?
A friend sent me an e-mail this week that included the YouTube clip I've featured here. It made me realize just how gullible our society can be! After watching the clip, I decided to type "dihydrogen monoxide" into my Google search and was amused to see what all came up. Snopes and Wikipedia both had articles regarding hoaxes, but one of the more entertaining sites I found was the DHMO homepage.
In this Internet age of ours, it's important that we check out the "facts" we're bombarded with. There are several "myth-buster" sites out there, but my favorite has always been Snopes.
So, please...before you open your mouth (or hit that forward key).... check it out!! It might save you some embarrassment.

Music Videos
MTV aired the first music videos in the early 80s (I believe "Video Killed the Radio Star" by the Buggles was the first) and they've since become a staple in the music industry. Videos can take a variety of formats. Some feature the artists, performing live or in the studio. Others use various images, often telling a story.
Here are a couple of videos that I think are quite clever. The first is "Rockstar" by Nickelback. It features a variety of famous faces interspersed with ordinary folks all lip-synching the title song.
The second video is "Name Droppin'" by the Christian rapper T-Bone. Almost every line he speaks works in the name of a Christian performer. He's also joined by a number of well-known artists in the video.
I can watch both of these over and over! I invariably catch something new each time.

Contemporary Christian Music
When the topic of Contemporary Christian Music comes up, many folks just automatically tune out. I'm sure there are plenty of folks who won't even read this entry just because of its title. I've learned in recent years that there is a huge variety of "Inspirational" music out there.... ranging from pop to easy listening to country to hard rock.... even rap. I love most all kinds of music and will give anything a try. What about you?
Here are some examples of Christian music you might never have heard before:
"Ocean Floor" by Audio Adrenaline: This is one of my favorite songs!
"Hotel Aquarium" by Falling Up: A youth choir recently performed this at our church and did a great job of it.
"How You Live (Turn Up the Music)" by Point of Grace: I saw them in concert not long ago and they were fantastic!
"Youth of the Nation" by P.O.D.: My daughter likes this group.
