Woe is me

See the box in the picture? That is the remote terminal for our satellite internet system. Notice there are only two blue lights lit up. To work properly, there must be five.

We've been without internet since Saturday evening. ETR (estimated time for repair) doesn't look good. With an upgrade (yes, that means extra money) it might be in a couple of weeks. Repairs on the current equipment could take months!!!

Switching to DSL or cable is not an option. We live too far out in the sticks for that. Even switching to a different satellite provider would take awhile.

I can do limited things on my Blackberry (which is how I'm posting this, if I remembered how to do it correctly), but that's also "iffy" since we don't get good cell reception at our house.

At least I'm getting more done at home since my #1 time-waster has been curtailed. *sigh*

Ahhhh, you silly girl, it's NOT a waste of time!!! WE NEED YOU! LOL! I'm really sorry you're having trouble. My sister in Benton, Louisiana still has dial-up because they don't have cable access where she is and it's so slow she seldom signs on. The funny thing is her son lives farther out, yet he has cable access! I hope your repairman moves quicker!!! (If you get desperate, do like I used to and go to the library and use their computers.) Blessings!!

We've had our Hughes Satellite internet service for less than a year, and the second box just went kaput. We're told that the warrantee is only good for 90 days. Rather than put out $200 for a new box, we went with a Verizon wireless card. Sometimes it's slow, because we live away from town in the hills, but so far, it's been more reliable than the satellite, which ranged from okay to, "gee, this isn't any faster than dialup" to, sometimes, nothing.

In our area, Verizon lets you try the card for 30 days. You can then return the card and get out of your contract. You might give it a try; data will get through when a voice call won't.

Sorry to hear about this. I'd be in rough shape without an internet connection.

Thanks for that suggestion, Hal, but it won't work for us. That's what my husband uses at our farm in the Delta, but we don't get a strong enough signal here.
We've used Hughes for 5 years & Direcway before that & had been fairly satisfied until now.
I feel kinda silly complaining since in the big scheme of things it's really just an inconvenience. However I do conduct some business online & help maintain our church website. So... I can take my laptop to the church & use their wireless to handle a few things. E-mail will still be a pain since most of mine is through my Outlook Express acct.on my laptop rather than g-mail or another type accessible from any computer.

Oh this is bad news! I am confident that, as resourceful as you are, you will find a way to stay connected. Good luck!

It's such a wakeup call to figure out how dependent you've become on certain technology. Our cell phones. Text messages (which I almost never did until a year ago)..social networking sites. Look how addicted we all were to Pearlsoup, now a distant memory. As vices go, it is pretty victimless (aside from self) is it not? I hope you find a way to make it work... somehow I think your ipod ought to be able to allow you to view the internet and post. Right? Right?

Woe indeed. Sorry to hear of this Kelly but in one way it comes as a bit of a relief as I was beginning to worry there might be something wrong with you or yours, thankfully it turns out not.

Hey Kelly! I'm relieved too, to know that you're okay. I was missing you! Hope you can find a solution soon.

Hey....I live in the city....I have Comcast.....it sucks from time to time. I'd have to hurt somebody if it took too long to fix or cable and internet. It makes you wonder how we ever survived when we were kids with no internet, no computers, no cell phones, and only three tv choices.

You know, I can live without the TV. The computer, however? No. I need my computer....
