I love to read and books have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. Although my mother read to me when I was young, I learned to read before I began school and always preferred reading to myself. We had a nice selection of books in our home belonging to my three older siblings as well as many of my parent’s books. In addition, I belonged to a "Dr. Seuss Book Club" where I received a new book every 6-8 weeks including books by P.D. Eastman, Bennett Cerf, the Berenstains and others as well as Seuss books like The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham.
Once I started school the opportunities for reading grew. Not only did my elementary school have a great library, our town’s public library was right across the street from my school. Even then there were so many books and so little time! I didn’t get around to favorites like Winnie-the-Pooh, The Chronicles of Narnia or Paddington Bear until I was a teenager. Others I didn’t grow to love until I read them to my own three kids: Goodnight Moon, I’ll Love You Forever, Runaway Bunny.
Here are my top five and some runners up:
1. Moonymouse by Helen & Alf Evers
2. Cheerful by Palmer Brown
3. If Jesus Came to My House by Joan Gale Thomas
4. Epaminondas and His Auntie by Sara Cone Bryant
5. Mud Pies and Other Recipes by Marjorie Winslow
Bird Life in Wington (J. Calvin Reid), Eight Bags of Gold (Parable of the Talents), Charlotte’s Web (E.B. White), The Boy Who Discovered the Earth (Henry Gregor Felsen), The Illustrated Treasury of Children’s Literature, The McGuffey Readers.

I was reading Mark Twain when I was 7 years old because after my father died, those were some of the only of his books Mama kept. Daddy had a huge library full of leather bound classics which Mama sold, keeping only the hardback books.
1. Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
2. Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain
3. Charlotte's Web by E. B. White
4. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
5. The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams
Other favorites are: All of Dr. Seuss's books (may be why I came to love poetry so much!), The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein, Old Yeller by Fred Gipson, The Yearling by Marjorie Rawlings, Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell (I read it twice when I was 11 years old), The Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum, Anne of Green Gables by Lucy Maud Montgomery, The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett, and Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls. I'll stop here. LOL!

2. Wind in the Willows
3. Tom Sawyer
4. Heidi
5. Trixie Belden Series
Me too, Debby!
Love Wind in the Willows and Heidi!
I wanted an Alm Uncle. LOL!
I also loved Ratty and Moley. And, of course, Mr. Toad and his red motor car.
I was also big on Alice in Wonderland and the OZ books.
And, let's not forget Nancy Drew and Clara Barton.
As you know I do enjoy the Dr. Suess books, especially The Cat In The Hat, but my all time favourite children's books must be
The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams.
Charlottes Web by E.B. White
The Water Babies by Charles Kingsley
The Winnie-The-Pooh stories by A.A. Milne
The Family From One End Street by Eve Garnett.
Though not around when I was a child, in recent years I've really enjoyed these children's books:
The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Night-Time by Mark Haddon and The Boy In The Blue Striped Pyjamas by John Boyne.
Debby, I haven't thought of Trixie Belden books in years!! I read some of those. I would love to compare notes on the book club to see how many of the same ones we have. That was a great investment for my parents since they were also read by all my kids. Even my granddaughter borrowed a couple last year for a book report.
Marion, Tracy... did y'all read E.B White's other books? I also liked Stuart Little and The Trumpet of the Swan! And Marion, I don't remember if I read The Secret Garden, but I did read A Little Princess by the same author.
Pamel, when I read I'll Love You Forever I never know if I want to laugh or cry!!
As for Dr. Seuss books, I love most of them, but I think my favorite is One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish.
I don't recall reading his other books, but I may have. My favorite Dr. Seuss was Green Eggs and Ham. In the 6th grade I wanted to be a race car driver and read all the books in the library about car racing. What can I say, I was ahead of my time. Ha! I can't stand NASCAR now, but I sure know alot about it. LOL! Great post, Kelly!
Yep, Trixie Belton
Love all the Oz books
Bobsey Twins ( did I already say that?)
We love the Walter the Farting Dog books around here
and...the latest favs are all the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books! Both my boys love them!!
I love the Velveteen Rabbit book, also.
Same goes for all the Martha the talking Dog books.
Oh, and a HUGE favorite around here is Dog Heaven. It'll make you cry. :)
My list is a combination of three of mine and each one of my kid's favorites:
1. Dandelion Cottage - Carole Watson Rankin
2. Little Women - Louisa May Alcott
3. Five Little Peppers and How They Grew - Margaret Sidney
4. Tom's: The Very Hungry Caterpillar - Eric Carle (Tom was visual, went for the drawings over the stories)
5. Andrea's: James and the Giant Peach - Roald Dahl. Andrea really loved the fantasy of books, didn't much get into real world stuff as a kid.
Good Night Moon is a top gift that I give new parents. Hours of reading enjoyment for my kids. Over, over and over.
Thanks for this particular trip down memory lane, Kelly.
