Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus

This hymn by Charles Wesley (1707-1788) has always been one of my favorites during Advent. I was reading through the lyrics for a project yesterday and they touched me deeply... almost as if reading them for the first time.

Come, thou long-expected Jesus,
Born to set they people free;
From our fears and sins release us;
Let us find our rest in thee.
Israel's strength and consolation,
hope of all the earth thou art;
Dear desire of every nation,
Joy of every longing heart.

Born thy people to deliver,
Born a child and yet a King,
Born to reign in us forever,
Now thy gracious kingdom bring.
By thine own eternal spirit
Rule in all our hearts alone;
By thine all-sufficient merit,
Raise us to thy glorious throne.

Charles Wesley has written some beautiful hymns. We tend to sing modern hymns in our church now, but I miss the old classics sometimes!

I love this one too! The words are just beautiful and the hymn tune is classic. I am going to go play it on the piano right now . . .

A great hymn. I sang hymns as I rocked both of my kids. Thank GOD they didn't care that I can't carry a tune in a bucket. LOL! Blessings!

The one that I love is In the Bleak Midwinter. When I first heard the hymn "Be Thou My Vision," I felt its antiquity. I don't know how to describe it better than that, but I knew immediately that it had come out of the mouths of people many generations ago, and I loved that the truth that they sang was still the truth that I sing. I love "In the Bleak Midwinter" for the self same reason.

Not a hymn I am familiar with. I shall have to ask Hd if he knows it. I love to hear carols at Christmas, they always take me back to childhood and bring a lump to my throat.

Joey - we have two services at our church. One uses all the old traditional stuff (with organ), the other is more contemporary (and casual).

Bob - I can struggle through this one on the piano, but do better with my favorite Lenten hymms.

Marion - when it comes to hymms, I've always believed it doesn't matter whether you're in key or not! It's the spirit that counts.

Debby - I love "Be Thou My Vision", but I need to go look up the lyrics to "In the Bleak Midwinter". I'm pretty sure I know the tune, but not all the words.

Tracy - If you google this hymn, you'll find several places that include the tune. You might recognize it then.

Dorte - I think I enjoy Advent hymns as much as the ones for Christmastide!

Thanks for sharing this, Kel.... I do miss the hymns that I heard in my earlier, more religious life. This one was lovely.

Love it, too. Also, like Debby, I love "The Bleak Midwinter".
