I featured this poem a few years ago on my 360 blog. It's one of my childhood favorites so I thought I'd share it again for FreeVerse this week. It's taken from my 1955 edition of The Illustrated Treasury of Children's Literature.
THE GOOPS
Gelett Burgess
The Goops they lick their fingers,
And the Goops they lick their knives;
They spill their broth on the tablecloth-
Oh, they lead disgusting lives!
The Goops they talk while eating,
And loud and fast they chew;
And that is why I'm glad that I
Am not a Goop - are you?

How sweet :O
What a fun poem. Surely a goop must be another name for a young boy!
I love it. Reminds me of Dr. Seuss, who was my childhood poet of choice. :-) Blessings!!
Cute! I should show this to my kids and then when they exhibit bad table manners (more than I care to admit), I could make it a code word of warning (esp. in public) "goop!" .
I LOVED this! So fun! And we are more goopy than we should be in this family!
I think I live with the prototype Goops! LOL!
Kelly,
I love this funny poem too!
And in the past I have met
a Goop now and then.

Great reminder to us about table manners! Thanks for sharing!
I've met my share of goops.
Sometimes when I'm at home alone...I am a goop.
Love it. *giggle*
I remember this poem very WELL from the many times you recited it during our "childhood!"
I remember this so well from Yahoo.... very goopy. Nice to have Bob validate the decades of you with this poem!
