Westerns

My husband was flipping through the channels last night and landed on TCM (Turner Classic Movies) which was showing True Grit. It's the only movie for which John Wayne received an Academy Award and it includes one of my favorite movie lines: "I call that bold talk for a one-eyed fat man." The next movie up was The Shootist, John Wayne's last movie and one loaded with an all-star cast. Despite the fact John Wayne is an actor many folks enjoy making fun of, he starred in well over 100 movies and made a name for himself in the world of "Westerns".

... Which brings me to wonder ... What ever happened to the Western?? Hollywood rarely puts out Westerns anymore. I can think of only two in recent years: 3:10 to Yuma and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford. Both seemed to do well at the box office... so why haven't there been more?

Just wondering.

Good suggestion, Mike. I'll add it to my list of future "favorite five" post topics.

I know this will date myself...but I and my brothers grew up on Saturday morning B&W TV shows...Roy Rogers and Dale Evans, Gene Autry, Lash LaRue, Cisco Kid, Lone Ranger, and who can forget Shane! Am I forgetting anyone? Oh, Yes! Sky King!

I can think of more TV westerns that I was a fan of than movies.

I grew up with Bonanza, Gunsmoke, Mavrick, Have Gun Will Travel, Big Valley, Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers, Wild, Wild, West, etc.

Movies would be spaghetti westerns such as the Clint Eastwood movies.

I heard someone once say that Westerns don't make buckets of money, so the studios quit making them. They must not know men. Ray can sit for HOURS watching ancient Westerns. We get a channel that plays really, really old ones during the week and he loves it. (They play "Wagon Train" which I watched as a very young child....so you KNOW they're old. LOL!) Yes, I vote for a top 5 Westerns, too! Blessings!
